While doing a dissertation is part of completing PhD and that is why people go through the slogging and the pain involved in the process. But a lot of you, who are doing it, have one thing on your minds and that is, since you have no choice but to do it, why not excel at it. You may wonder if that is even possible and when you are writing for the first time, how you may go about achieving it. Here are some easy tips:

Choose the topic wisely: When you select your topic, make sure it is something that is easy for you to study, understand and elaborate. A difficult topic may lead you to doing your job half-heartedly or badly.

Varied resources: Give more importance to the diversity of resources. It may be tempting to get all your information off the internet, but books, magazines and journals may have a lot more in store for you.

Learn from the best: Study other dissertation samples and see how people who have achieved great things, do it. For all you know, you might land up with something that is written about your own field of study and may be able to discover yet another source of information.

Make a mentor: You already have an evaluator, but look for a mentor, some who has been there and done that, someone who might be able to understand and explain how you must tackle the dissertation without getting hassled.

Excelling at a dissertation is not a very tough task, all you need is some amount of innovation and the drive to achieve something that is challenging and requires an extra effort. There have been achievers before you and people will keep achieving, but how you make your dissertation is what matters the most.

Tips for writing a robust dissertation proposal

A dissertation proposal builds the foundation for your dissertation; hence, it should provide an accurate description of the objectives of your dissertation and the research methodologies you aim to undertake. Student should aim for three objectives; if you have more than three objectives in your dissertation proposal, it means that your area of research is too broad and you need to make the scope of the research narrower. After listing the objectives, you should throw light on the literature you plan to review. Some universities expect students to list specific references, in which case you should aim to provide details of the books, articles and journals that will help strengthen your dissertation statement.

In the next section of the dissertation proposal, you should enlighten your supervisor on the research methodologies you intend to undertake, such as quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies. It is also important to state how you will be collecting the necessary data (e.g. through interviews, questionnaires, surveys, or focus groups). This way, your supervisor will be able to suggest better ways of collecting data before you conduct primary research.

Last but not least, you should provide a detailed timeline of the activities you intend to undertake and the amount of time you plan to spend on each of the activities. This way, you will not fall short of time when you start writing your dissertation.
